Priceless art destroyed by “restoration”

Standard

We don’t even know for certain why some Madonnas in ancient churches and cathedrals were portrayed with black skin (and in most cases they were carved of black wood or stone or painted black; they did NOT develop a black skin tone from centuries of candle and incense smoke) and now the Madonna of the Pillar at Chartres has virtually been destroyed. This is a travesty.
