Describing Characters

Standard

Writers, when do you start giving a physical description of your character? Does it vary from book to book? Do you have any pet peeves about character description, other than the character looking into a mirror?

  1. I try to give the briefest descriptions possible. I don’t think we need to go into great detail like “her flowing chestnut locks whipped in the wind, blocking her doe-like violet eyes in her elfin face with alabaster skin.”

Really, who wants to read that? It’s too much. I prefer to give a few hints, then let the reader fill it in as they please in their own mind.
