Ellipses, like the Oxford Comma, are either loved in fiction or despised. Writers engage in furious and sometimes hostile arguments over whether either should be used at all. I like both, and use both. I’ve flipped through multiple fiction bestsellers in different genres and it seems that most authors use ellipses at least occasionally, and different authors seem to have their own rules for their use of ellipses. Or maybe the rules are set by their editor.  I found this guide very helpful for explaining the use of ellipses in fiction, so if you’re struggling, maybe it will help you too.

  1. I use ellipses occasionally in dialog. Oxford comma… the jury’s still out. I have started incorporating it, but I was taught in school (back in the dim time) not to put a comma between the 2nd & 3rd items in a series.
