The Help Withheld

Standard

I remember when

You said that someone broke in

I gave you what I couldn’t afford to give

Where are you now?

I remember when

They cut your water off again

I gave you what I couldn’t afford to give

Where are you now?

I remember when

I helped you promote your art

Your book

Your shop

So many years, again and again

Where are you now?

I helped you then

But I fight my fights alone

I’m used to it

Just know that what drove me

To help so many in big and little ways

Is dead

And it won’t rise

Even if I win.
